POSSIBLE CAREER OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS ENROLLED IN THE WELDING PROGRAM:

  • Machinist

Required Safety Equipment For Welding Technology

The following personal protective equipment (PPE) is required for working in the welding shop. The students must provide their own equipment. In the following list, items that may be purchased at Washington Square have their prices in parentheses.  This is the price that Washington Square will sell that item for; you are not required to purchase anything from Washington Square. There is other safety equipment that will be provided. All Welding Technology students will have a locker at Washington Square to hold their equipment.

  • Safety Glasses – Must have “Z87” inscribed on them (Wash Square - $2)
  • Welding Gloves – Must be all leather and have a high gauntlet (Wash Square - $10)
  • Welding Jacket – Must have leather sleeves (Wash Square - $40)
  • Welding Hood/Helmet – I recommend an auto-darkening hood. I really recommend Harbor Freight only for this item.  You can expect to pay in the neighborhood of $50. Get one with “Grind Mode”. Fancy hoods can cost hundreds! No matter where you get your hood, be sure to get extra clear plates.
  • Safety Toe Boots or Steel Toe Boots– Leather boots are recommended.  Available at Walmart, Army Surplus, etc. The toe must be reinforced with steel, etc.  You can expect to pay around $40.  The price can be much higher for higher quality boots.
  • Cotton Jeans – No shorts, sweats, or leggings allowed. No synthetic fabrics (Nylon, Polyester, Spandex, etc). Also, no holes.
  • Cotton Shirt – Long or short sleeve.  This will be worn under the welding jacket. A T-shirt is fine, or a hoodie if it’s cold.
  • Cotton Socks – Really. Check that your socks are at least 50% cotton.
