Teacher Spotlight - Kim Thompson - Law Enforcement

Ms. Kim Thompson - FutureForward at Washington Square

First year teacher Ms. Kim Thompson is our February teacher spotlight. Ms. Thompson is our second instructor in the Law Enforcement program at Washington Square. She has an undergraduate degree from Northern Arizona University in Vocational Education and a Graduate Degree from Walden University in Criminal Justice / Public Management and Leadership. Ms. Thompson also has a certification as a  Speech/Language Pathologist Assistant

What was your experience prior to teaching?

I worked in the Maricopa County Jail in AZ when I was 19 years old before joining the Phoenix Police Department. I was an officer in Phoenix for 10 years. I worked as a patrol officer and as a detective in the Bias/Hate Crimes Unit, Adult Sexual Assault Unit, and Crimes Against Children’s Unit. I then left law enforcement to raise my son, Hunter. I worked as a paraprofessional with kiddos who have autism and as a Speech/Language Pathologist Assistant. We moved from AZ to CO in 2012, where I went through the police academy for a second time and worked for the Arvada Police Department. I then worked as an Investigator with the Boulder District Attorney’s office for 7.5 years working on Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence cases.

What are your hobbies?

I love working out, mountain biking, listening to music, spending time with my family and dogs.

What is your favorite part of being a teacher?

I love being able to teach my students multiple aspects of law enforcement and to be able to shed some positivity on this profession. It is great to allow the students to use all of the gear we have to bring the practical side to what we do.

What is your favorite genre of movies?

My favorite movies are probably romantic comedies. My favorite movie is Never Been Kissed with Drew Barrymore. I really enjoy the feel good movies, even though I tend to watch crime series on a regular basis as well.

Anything else you could share?

I have a wonderful husband of 18 years and 3 wonderful children. I hope to have a smaller house some day to have a few farm animals to love on.
